The iDE Global team has improved the lives of more than 19 million people living in impoverished rural communities over the past 30 years with a mission and market-oriented development model that creates lasting income and livelihood opportunities. The iDE WASH program (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) is dedicated to preventing water-related disease by providing access to clean drinking water, hand washing and proper sanitation while generating income for people in developing countries through the manufacture and sale of such sanitation equipment.
iDE Cambodia’s sanitation marketing program aims to create a market for household latrines by using a network of sanitation teachers on the sales side and latrine business owners on the supply side. iDE’s challenges included getting better visibility into their latrine sales numbers and creating an effective way to match supply with demand.
"We believe real-time data is one of the most important tools to reach scale. It allows us to critically reflect on what we're doing and helps us make better decisions."
Michel Dauguet, WASH Program Director
iDE is using TaroWorks to log weekly latrine sales from the field. Additionally, an iDE supply chain coordinator uses Salesforce.com to forecast demand based on data collected with TaroWorks so iDE can more quickly deliver over 6,000 latrines each month. This solution has dramatically improved the WASH program’s daily operation across a network of over 200 sales agents, 100 independent latrine manufacturers and 25 supply chain coordinators in rural Cambodia. iDE sold over 140,000 units in just two and a half years and expected to sell more than 223,000 in the next three years.
Michel Dauguet, the WASH program director for iDE, explained that people can work their way out of poverty if they are provided with business opportunities that are designed with them and their unique needs in mind. To reach this change, Dauguet said access to accurate data is key.
