The Client

The BOMA Project is a Kenyan NGO and a U.S. nonprofit with a proven track record, measurable results and a transformative approach to alleviating poverty and building resilience in the drylands of Africa. Through a two-year poverty graduation program called the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP), BOMA helps women to “graduate” from extreme poverty by giving them the tools they need to start small businesses and establish a savings program in their communities. With this new and diversified source of income, they can feed their families, pay for school fees and medical care, accumulate savings for long-term stability, survive drought and adapt to a changing climate.

The Challenge

With BOMA's assistance, these women are able to manage a steady cash flow, plan for future medical and school expenses and accumulate savings for long-term stability to withstand potential family or drought emergencies. However, due to the lack of formal infrastructure and remote location, efficiently gathering data for REAP and tracking program progress has been a challenge for many BOMA field staff.

"TaroWorks gave us flexible data collection and field force management software that works where wifi and mobile phone service don’t. They also helped us think through expanding our Salesforce database to ease the conversion from paper to digital monitoring and evaluation."

Kathleen Colson, Co-Founder and CEO

The Solution

BOMA mentors use TaroWorks on a daily basis to qualify women for the program and connect them to the right local business and savings support group. They also track the women's progress and monitor issues arising from group meetings. BOMA can now collect key program metrics and evaluate their project efforts even in the remote, rugged areas of northern Kenya in which it operates. This greater efficiency has helped BOMA field staff monitor over 4,000 savings and business groups.
